A Sweet and Unique Cake Smash Session
Whether you are planning a first birthday cake smash session for a boy or a girl, the possibilities to create something unique are endless. And this hot air balloon cake smash was no exception! When I spoke to this little lady’s mommy about what she wanted for her cake smash pictures, she said fluffy clouds and sweet little hot air balloons. She showed me the beautiful little tutu dress that she had picked out for her daughter to wear, and we took some time to look though photos on Pinterest together. I love to work closely with parents to help execute their vision. And this unique idea had me hooked!
I must admit this hot air balloon cake smash took quite a bit of work to set up, but I just love how it came out. And although this set was constructed with a little girl in mind, it would be a great idea for a boy as well! All it would take to tweak it for a boy is different colors for the hot air balloons.
Constructing DIY Hot Air Balloon Props
To bring this cake smash to life, I started with my Savage Seamless backdrop in the color Bone. Then I got some supplies and got crafty! I constructed the hot air balloons using 12×12 scrapbook paper cut into oval shapes and carefully assembling and gluing them together. Mom wanted the balloons to be in soft colors with a touch of warm pink. They ended up matching the tutu dress perfectly!
For the clouds, I followed this DIY cloud tutorial. They came out so fluffy and cute! Once the clouds were attached to the back, I used a backdrop stand and clear fishing wire (not pictured here) to hang the balloons in front of the clouds. This gave the illusion that the hot air balloons were floating in the air!
Cute Cake Smash Photos
I just loved working on this hot air balloon cake smash session! It was just the right amount of girly and the result was whimsical and oh so sweet. Her mommy, daddy and even grandma came to the photo session. I could tell this family had an incredible bond as they all sang and clapped and cheered together. She sure is one lucky little lady! Happy birthday, sweet girl! I’m so happy I got to celebrate your first birthday with you and your family!
