Everything you need to know about Booking a Newborn Session

The newborn phase slips away so quickly.  Your baby changes and grows by leaps and bounds during the early days.  Before you know it, that amazing newborn smell is gone, along with the adorable peach fuzz skin and sweet little rolls and wrinkles.  My Newborn Portrait Experience creates authentic images that celebrate every precious detail and preserves these moments in time.  So you can always remember them in a way that they will never be again – brand new.

The Newborn Portrait Experience Explained

My portrait studio and process is dedicated to the art of newborn photography.  If you are interested in a newborn portrait session, you likely have a lot of questions about what to expect.  I prepared this post to explain my entire newborn portrait experience.  From what happens after you submit an inquiry, to the planning that goes into each session, and receiving your finished artwork .  I even have options to extend your experience beyond the newborn session and into the first year.

Pre-Session Consultation

Our journey together begins with a pre-session consultation after your initial inquiry.  This consultation can be over email, a phone call, or even in person.  I like to get to know my clients so that I can serve them better.  We will discuss your family and your goals for your portrait session.  I will also answer any questions that you may have.

This is also an excellent opportunity for you to get to know me.  Every photographer has a different style, different studio environment, and different business practices.  I strive to provide a high level of service by creating a customized experience and delivering classic images of your baby and family.

The pre-session consultation helps set us up for a fun and successful experience together.  Once you have decided that I am a great fit for your family, I will send you my Portrait Agreement and Session Retainer.  It is best to book your newborn session as early into your pregnancy as possible.  However, if your baby has already arrived and you are interested in newborn portraits, please contact me right away so that we can discuss last minute options.

Portrait Planning and Preparation

Once your Portrait Agreement and Session Retainer have been received, we will begin planning out your session – the fun part!  I will send you my Client Questionnaire and Session Preparation Guide.  This is when I will determine styling options for your session, including colors, props, and poses.  I am available at any time during the planning period to answer your questions or have a discussion about your session.

I book your due date in my calendar as a placeholder during the Portrait Planning process.  Once baby is born, make sure a family member is in charge of reaching out to let me know.  We will determine the actual date for your session shortly after baby has arrived.  The ideal timeframe to come in for your session will be within 5-10 days after birth.

The Portrait Session

Your newborn portrait session takes place at my comfortable home studio in Randolph, NJ.  My sessions last between 2-3 hours, depending on what we will be covering during your session.  Based on the goals that we established during the Pre-Session Consultation, I will have everything setup and ready before you arrive so that we can get the most out of our time together.  This will include backdrops, props, wraps, and any other accessories.

I have a parent lounge with comfortable recliners where you are welcome to relax while I work with baby.  You would not be the first parent who has taken a nap in the studio!  I provide some beverages while you wait, and you are also welcome to bring your own snacks.  There is a restroom and private changing/nursing room.  A diaper changing station stocked with newborn diapers and wipes is also available for your convenience.  I provide everything for families to feel comfortable during their session.

Image Reveal and Delivery

Your images are typically ready two weeks after your portrait session.  If you have purchased a Digital Collection, the images will be delivered via a password-protected online gallery.  You will receive instructions on how to download your digital files and a copy of your print release.  I also include helpful tips on backing up your files and recommended print labs.  If you have chosen a Print Collection, I will work with you to help select and fulfill your artwork.  Whether it is choosing the best pieces to showcase on your walls, or crafting a beautiful heirloom quality album.  There are no additional creative fees for the preparation and delivery of your art.  This is part of the Newborn Portrait Experience that my clients have come to love.

Baby’s First Year

Our experience together does not need to end after your newborn session!  Many families choose to upgrade to the Baby’s First Year plan.  This includes a Baby Milestone Session, which is usually scheduled around six months, as well as a First Birthday Cake Smash session.  I just love watching my little clients grow and how much they change from one session to another!  You will be sure to love all the beautiful and unique images that we will capture along the way.  You will receive a hardcover heirloom album at the end of the year with all the images you have purchased from each session.  It is the ultimate keepsake of your baby’s first year – there is nothing else like it.
