Maternity photography is a beautiful way to celebrate your journey to motherhood, and a studio session offers the perfect environment to create timeless, artistic portraits. One way we can achieve this is by using creative lighting techniques. One-Light Umbrella Setup for Soft and Flattering Light
A one-light umbrella setup is my go-to choice for maternity photography. This type of light provides soft and even illumination that enhances the natural glow of an expectant mother. By positioning a strobe light behind a shoot-through umbrella at a 45-degree angle, the resulting effect is a flattering light that wraps around the face and body. This simple yet effective setup minimizes harsh shadows while maintaining depth, resulting in timeless and elegant maternity portraits. The umbrella’s diffusion ensures that the light remains gentle on the subject’s skin, highlighting the features in a beautiful and natural way. This one-light umbrella setup is how I also photograph newborns and babies because the lighting is so soft and flattering. I find that it’s perfect for subjects of any age and size.
Backlighting for a Glowing, Dreamy Effect
Backlighting is another excellent technique for maternity portraits that is easy to achieve in a studio session. If you’ve ever seen images that seem to be shot in front of a brightly lit window, this is the concept of backlighting. To achieve this look, we position a light behind the subject to create a glowing halo effect. In maternity portraits, this lighting setup enhances the silhouette of the expectant mother. I love using backlighting for maternity sessions because it lends an ethereal and almost magical quality to the images. When paired with sheer fabrics or flowing gowns, backlighting adds a sense of movement and softness, making the images feel weightless and dreamy. It also makes wonderful black-and-white images because of the stark contrast with the glowing light around the subject and the darkened subject.
