Chasing the Evening Sun for a Stunning Sunset Maternity Session
Ahh, the evening sun. I can’t tell you how much I love sunsets and the beautiful light they produce. There is something so magical about the soft, warm light that is cast by the setting sun. Everything seems to glow underneath it. Photographers often refer to the hour before sunset as the “golden hour.” This golden hour light is the most flattering type of light to take outdoor portraits. I genuinely get giddy about it. And this beautiful sunset maternity session absolutely had me swooning.
I met this stunning mom to be when she was 35 weeks along. Before we met, she told me that this was their first baby, and that their maternity pictures would be very special to them. I’m always so honored when clients share their special moments with me. After all, starting a family and waiting for a baby is such a special time for an expecting couple. I could tell how in love they were, and how lucky this baby would be to have so much love all around!
Sunset Maternity Photos Near a Lake
I wanted a beautiful location for this sunset maternity session that would really highlight the golden light. This picturesque park came to mind with the peaceful lake and streams running through it. We walked down a little trail that led to the edge of the water, where we stopped to take a few photos. I could see the orange light kissing the treetops as the sun was starting to set along the horizon behind us. The expecting mom wore a beautiful light peach colored maternity dress, which was the perfect compliment to the warm tones produced by the golden hour light.
Afterwards we walked alongside the stream that flows into the lake. Water was gently flowing along the rocky creek with soft gurgling sounds. At one point we came across a charming little wooden bridge that went over the water. The whole scene was very romantic, and the expecting couple even stole a kiss while standing on the bridge. I could tell that these maternity pictures were going to turn out stunning, and boy was I right.
Capturing the Last of the Golden Hour Sunlight
In order to catch the last bit of golden hour sun, we had to quickly make our way back toward the lake. There is a clearing that faces the trees in the far away distance. This is where the last of the sunlight can be seen before it goes down below the horizon. I placed the expecting mom in a backlit position, meaning the sun was shining from behind her. This made her seem to glow with the soft light that was gently illuminating the landscape behind her. The mom to be looked positively radiant!
As her husband was doing something in the background, she turned around to look at him. I captured her in that moment, and I just love the expression that was on her face. It was so natural and so beautiful. I asked him to join her for a final picture, and they both seemed to look down and close their eyes at the same time. It was a perfect snapshot to end our golden hour sunset maternity session.
